You shall not pass scam!

So all you Lord of the Rings geeks know that in the movie Gandalf says to the Balrog "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" in the mines of Moria. But all you true Lord of the Rings geeks know that is a SCAM! Yeah you heard me right a scam. According to the book Gandalf says "YOU CANNOT PASS!". so that proves the writer of the Lord of the Rings screenplay did not what so ever read the books thoroughly or thought for some bizzare reason that sounds better. I myself have to agree that it does sound better BUT it is technically incorrect. It is preposterous that the writer had the nerve to take such a good line and change it. What do you think is better "You shall not pass" or "You cannot pass"

  1. In the italian version of the movie it's "tu non puoi passare", "you cannot pass", so at least in italian it's correct ;)

  2. "You shall not pass" has far more gravitas - definitely better. The film is not a literal transcription of the book, it is an homage to it. The screenplay is sympathetic to the original text although it is ever mindful of the cinematic impact of every scene and line of dialogue, as it should be, in my view.
